Day 108: “It Don’t Mean a Thing if It Ain’t Got that Swing!”

Sometimes I like to swing it like Ella to some old tunes. I danced naked to a playlist from the 1930’s-40’s on 8tracks. I just feel so nostalgic to this kind of music even though I never lived during that time. I know it’s not technically the “flapper era” about ten years earlier but  I was inspired to illustrate a fun lady from that time while swinging to these tunes. I listened to some great tracks like “Straighten up and Fly Right”, “It Don’t Mean a Thing if it Ain’t Got that Swing”, and “Minnie the Moocher”. There was a carefree and extravagant lifestyle people where living just before The Great Depression hit  when the stock market crashed in the fall of 1929. In spite of this, music still thrived and lifted the spirits of Americans who were out of work and dirt poor. Songs like “When You’re Smiling” by Louis Prima warms my heart and reminds me of the enduring magic of the human spirit.

Day 102-107: Form, Freedom, and Fashion

So I’ve really gotten into Project Runway with my boyfriend. I was inspired by some of the designer’s sketches on the show and decided to play with the female form, fashion trends, and nudity. I myself have felt as if my body wasn’t womanly enough, not curvy enough, and I looked like a boy. Looking at fashion I feel there are so many ways to show femininity whether you are curvy, on the slender side, or in between. Femininity is ones own.
